What Sells at Forums

It’s been an year since I registered my first domain as a reseller. It was “CreativeShoppe.com”. I thought I’d made a great find and this single name would prove to be one of the biggest sales till date.

It was a great name as the two words complemented each other, and I thought an Investor would immediately jump on it. But after numerous sales attempts, I had to let it expire. Since then, I have been reading up a lot at these forums, trying to figure out what sells and what doesent. Figuring out what sells at forums was a task at hand, and still is. There is quite a bit of contrast in what sells at forums and what other domainers tend to develop, or buy for development. My primary sales point is still the forums, where I have till date made some good sales. Continue reading ‘What Sells at Forums’

Starting another project – CheckTM

We have been working on a new Project titled “CheckTM”. This is a service i plan to launch which will help a user check whether a domain has a trademark attached to it or not. This will be a free service which would not only check US trademarks, but a host of other countries, and will give out a full report based on the same.

Today we have finished the first draft outlining key areas to cover in the first phase of development. I hope to complete the first phase by September 15th, 2008; and to cover all aspects including User Registration, Domain submission, Online Report & Report by Mail, Comparatives and substitutes, and finally Account Settings Panel.

I will keep the blog updated with the progress on the project :)

Grace Deletions – Good Or Bad?

With ICANN imposing a fee of 20 cents per registration to the registrar, and the registrar imposing a compulsory fee on the registrant, things arent looking up for the big time tasters. As the obvious first reaction was that of condemning the move, there now seem to be mixed reactions from the communities.

For the Move

  • More domains would be available for the smaller investors.
  • Useless names would stop appearing and re-appearing from the deleted lists.
  • Bigger players would need to manually sift through the domains, giving the smaller investors equal grounds for competing.
  • Auction houses would have a more refined inventory for sale.

ICANN imposes fee on grace deletions

Recently ICANN changed the rules for grace deletions of new domains. For every domain registered, Registrar needs to pay a $0.20 fee to ICANN. Domains registered July 4 or earlier can still be grace deleted for free.

This marks the end of domain tasting.
Here is the GNSO council report to ICANN regarding domain tasting – http://gnso.icann.org/issues/domain-…il-25apr08.pdf
It applies to COM, NET, INFO, ORG, MOBI, ASIA, NAME TLDS

Some letters received by members of Moniker & Dynadot announcing a new fee and removal of grace deletions:

Success Story – tldrental @ DNForum

With all the confusion and low sales around, I thought the domaining noobs like me needed a little positivity from some of the “normal” people like us doing well. I found a post at DNForum which is a recent success story and re-enforces my belief in domaining backed by development.

Future of “Vanity” Extensions – ICANN

How will the Custom Extensions do next year when ICANN makes them available? Would they oust .com and lower its demand? How will .net and .org survive the absolute carnage caused by all the hype with “Buy Your Own Extension”? Do we need to boycott and vow to never trade in these extensions when they are released? These are the hot topics of discussion at NamePros and DnForum at the respective links.

With all the discussion going on @ the forums about the release of custom extensions by ICANN, I found a  post @ FragerFactor, which describes what the future holds for the vanity extensions :D

COM’promised? The Big Bang Ready to Rough it up.

PARIS (AFP) — Web regulators Thursday voted to allow the creation of thousands of new domain names, from .paris to .Pepsi, in one of the biggest shake-ups in Internet history, a French web official said.

The overhaul is expected to radically change the way users navigate the Internet and has major implications for businesses and consumers worldwide.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) board approved the change at its annual general meeting in Paris, according to Loic Damilaville, deputy head of the French domain name body, the AFNIC.

    Sales Down @ Forums

Recently the sales threads have been going unanswered with so many sellers bumping them to no avail.

There has been a discussion and some say its due to recession and buyers are applying the “wait and watch” approach. I believe that this is due to a mix of the recession scare, the possibility of extensions being free and on demand; and also the Snowe bill, which aims to make a domainers life more difficult. Some no longer feel domains are the securest of Investments, looking at shocking reverse domain hijacking cases being thrown into limelight. I dotn want to sound overly pessimistic, but a lot of negatives are creeping up and comparative newbies like myself can only brace for the future.

    One Year & Counting… :)

I have completed one year of domaining today. With a confused and haphazard start, forums like DNF and NP provided a good source of info to be on the learning curve. I started off with almost $3500 in Investment, and at a point in time it looked to be a total loss of time and money. But I’ve seen that reading up on these forums, its not so difficult to ride the domaining bandwagon after all ;)

Still a lot to learn, but I’m sure glad i found this business, and i’m not leaving anytime soon!!!
