Grace Deletions – Good Or Bad?

With ICANN imposing a fee of 20 cents per registration to the registrar, and the registrar imposing a compulsory fee on the registrant, things arent looking up for the big time tasters. As the obvious first reaction was that of condemning the move, there now seem to be mixed reactions from the communities.

For the Move

  • More domains would be available for the smaller investors.
  • Useless names would stop appearing and re-appearing from the deleted lists.
  • Bigger players would need to manually sift through the domains, giving the smaller investors equal grounds for competing.
  • Auction houses would have a more refined inventory for sale.

How will .net and .org survive the absolute carnage caused by all the hype with “Buy Your Own Extension”? Do we need to boycott and vow to never trade in these extensions when they are released? These are the hot topics of discussion at NamePros and DnForum at the respective links.

With all the discussion going on @ the forums about the release of custom extensions by ICANN, I found a  post @ FragerFactor, which describes what the future holds for the vanity extensions :D

    Sales Down @ Forums

Recently the sales threads have been going unanswered with so many sellers bumping them to no avail.

There has been a discussion and some say its due to recession and buyers are applying the “wait and watch” approach. I believe that this is due to a mix of the recession scare, the possibility of extensions being free and on demand; and also the Snowe bill, which aims to make a domainers life more difficult. Some no longer feel domains are the securest of Investments, looking at shocking reverse domain hijacking cases being thrown into limelight. I dotn want to sound overly pessimistic, but a lot of negatives are creeping up and comparative newbies like myself can only brace for the future.
